GCSE English Language is one of only two qualifications every university, employer, and career pathway in the UK requires. It's not optional. It's a gatekeeper, and the grade your child achieves will follow them for life.
We offer expert-led tuition for Years 9, 10 and 11, built around proven exam technique, monthly progress testing, and real intervention when it's needed.
With GCSE English Language pass rates sitting below the national GCSE average, the right support makes a critical difference to your child's future options.
From your first assessment to exam day, here is exactly what your child's GCSE English Language journey looks like at Sterling Study.
Your child completes a free diagnostic assessment covering core GCSE subjects. We generate a detailed PDF report identifying their current working grade, specific strengths, and the exact skills holding them back. No obligation, no pressure.
Your child joins a live session matched to their ability level, experiencing our exam-focused teaching style first-hand. No obligation, no commitment.
Students enrol in regular weekly sessions building progressively towards their final exams. Every lesson reinforces both subject knowledge and exam technique.
Every student sits a monthly assessment covering everything taught in recent sessions. Results feed into a detailed individual report showing exactly where your child stands, which question types need attention, and how their grade trajectory is tracking. Reports are shared directly with parents via WhatsApp and the parent app, and our tutors use the data to adjust focus in class and at home. Nothing is guesswork. Every decision is backed by the numbers.
Students who fall below expected progress in their monthly tests are offered free 1-to-1 sessions targeting their specific weak areas, whether that's inference questions, language analysis, or timed writing tasks. We close gaps before they affect exam performance.
We teach the complete GCSE English Language syllabus across AQA, Edexcel and OCR exam boards.
Identifying and analysing meaning, language techniques, and writers' perspectives across a range of text types.
Crafting engaging narratives and vivid descriptions that earn top marks in both paper sections.
Producing purposeful, audience-aware writing across all required forms and formats.
Building confidence in spoken communication, assessed separately and awarded Pass, Merit, or Distinction.
AQA · Edexcel · OCR covered: The core skills (reading comprehension, language analysis, creative writing, transactional writing) are identical across all three boards. Differences lie primarily in text selections, paper structure, and question wording. We prepare students for all three with board-specific exam technique practice built into every session.
Since 2017, GCSEs have used a 9 to 1 grading scale. Here is what each grade means for your child's future.
Grade 4 is the minimum pass required for most university courses, apprenticeships, and further education pathways. But grade 4 is just the baseline. For genuine opportunities (A Level Humanities, competitive apprenticeships, Russell Group universities) students need grades 6 to 7 or higher.
At Sterling Study, we don't just help students pass, we help them excel. Our monthly progress testing identifies weak areas early, our free intervention sessions close gaps before they compound, and our data driven approach ensures students are always working at the right level.
Understanding the national picture helps parents see why expert support matters.

"Joined in Year 9 for both English and Maths. My son went from predicted grade 5 to achieving grade 7 in his actual exams. The monthly testing kept him accountable and the tutors spotted exactly where he was struggling."
"The difference between Sterling Study and other tutors we tried is the structure. They don't just go through practice papers, they actually teach exam technique. My daughter's writing improved dramatically over the course of a year."
